Course Policy – ADP Beginning and Intermediate Algebra MWF

 

Please Read This Policy, You are RESPONSIBLE For ALL ITS CONTENT !!!!!

                            Required Text:  Beginning and Intermediate Algebra 4th Edition, Lial-Honsby-McGinnis; Pearson

 

I.  Grading  90-100    A               Tests, (Notebook, Daily, MML HW, Attendance each worth one test grade)  =       75%                                    80-89       B               Final Comprehensive Exam (all subject matter covered during the semester)  =       25%                                   70-79       C            Note:  Pop Quizzes, Group Quizzes and graded assignments make-up DAILY GRADES

                   Below 70   F           Note:  You will not be allowed to re-take the final exam or the last test of the semester !

 

II.  Attendance Policy:  Classroom attendance is MANDATORY !  A student is expected to attend each class.  For each absence you will lose 5 points off your attendance (test) grade – NO EXCUSED ABSENCES. A tardy is 1/2 an absence and worth a deduction of 2.5 points – leaving class early is considered as a tardy.  After your 6th absence you will receive an “F” in the course.  YOU MUST COME TO CLASS ON THE LAST DAY BEFORE EXAM WEEK TO RECEIVE YOUR GRADES.  FAILURE TO COME TO THIS CLASS WILL RESULT IN 15 POINTS BEING DEDUCTED FROM YOU FINAL EXAM GRADE.

 

III.  Daily  Work (Homework):  Homework will be taken up before class starts.  Please do neat work and :

1)  Rewrite all questions (except word problems).  You must use a pencil !  Create a  three ring                                          notebook for your work with chapters separated !

            2)  Do neat work in pencil and on notebook paper- use graph paper for graphs.

3)  Spread your work out, BOX ALL ANSWERS for credit.  Organization is important                                                  for success in this class.  You must do your assignments to be successful.

4)      PLEASE BRING TWO RED FELT TIP PINS TO CLASS EACH DAY – FOR QUIZZES

 

Please mark any questions you might have to ask me in your book incase I take up homework.  You will need a calculator.   Under no circumstances will any daily work be made up !  Quizzes will not be made up, but you may have another student turn in your homework.  You will loose 3 points for each day homework is late !   I  WILL  NOT  GRADE SLOPPY ASSIGNMENTS -  YOU WILL BE ASKED TO REDO THEM.  I will accept up to two (2)  extra curricular activities for daily work.  Ball games, religious meetings, Center Stage Series, plays, concerts, counseling workshops, non-traditional support meetings etc., will be evaluated for consideration.  You MUST EMAIL your extra credit  involvement  within a WEEK of your activity and I will evaluate(consider) it for your daily points.  You must type: EXTRA CREDIT , YOUR NAME & YOUR CLASS TIME on the SUBJECT ENTRY of  your extra credit email request.  I reserve the right to give extra daily points, extra test points, or no points for extra curricular credit.  The last day to send extra credit is the same as the last day to re-take a test.

 

IV.  Notebook:   You are required to keep an organized notebook (which is worth one test grade) for this class.  Organization is part of the curriculum for this class.  The notebook should be a three ring binder.  To receive all the allowable points for your notebook your notebook should contain the following:

1)   Three ring binder with all the chapters (assignments)  SEPERATED BY TAB SEPARATORS.

2)   All assignments complete as per policy statement III.

3)   Assignments, notes and tests separated and organized by chapters.

            4)    All pencil and paper assignment in a tabbed section

            5)    Please print each MML assignment to be added to your notebook with “scratch paper”

 

THE NOTEBOOK WILL BE GRADED SOMETIME AFTER MID-TERM!  PLEASE BRING IT TO CLASS AT ALL TIMES.  20 Points will be deducted if you do not bring your notebook to class when it is to be graded.

 

 

 

 

 

V.  Tests:  There will be approximately 6,  50 minute tests.  Under NO  circumstances (unless prior arrangements have been made with me personally) will a test be made up.  You will be allowed to retake 1 one hour test.  This includes a test that you did not take or where absent from.   You may retake the (one) test at anytime during the semester.   You will have 2 (two) weeks after you have received your test to contest your grade score.   Please check the addition of the incorrect answers and grading - YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE TO CHECK YOUR GRADES, ESPECIALLY YOUR TEST GRADES AND GRADING !   THE LAST DAY TO RETAKE A TEST WILL BE ON OR BEFORE Friday 11-26-08  BY 9:00 AM NO EXCEPTIONS ! (TRY TO TAKE YOUR RETAKE ONE TO TWO WEEKS AFTER YOUR TEST!!)    You may NOT retake the LAST TEST or take it late –30 points will be deducted for each day you take it after the test date.

 

VI.  Exam:  The final exam will be comprehensive.  Please  study the old tests and quizzes for the final.  The final will be similar to the old tests and quizzes.   There will be no partial credit given and all work must be shown.    The answers and work must be correct REGARDLESS of the work you did on previous hour tests.  Because you got an answer correct on a hour test does not mean that the work or answer is correct for the final.   Come by my office and check any answers and work  on your old chapter tests - I will be glad to help you correct your old test or check your answers and my  grading  - I do make mistakes sometimes - especially if I use a grader !!!!  UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL YOU BE ALLOWED TO RETAKE YOUR FINAL EXAM.  TAKING AN EXAM LATE (AFTER YOU APPOINTED TIME) WILL RESULT IN A 25 POINT REDUCTION OF YOU GRADE. Remember the correct work & the correct answer must be provided on the final exam to receive  four points for each question.

 

VII.  Class behavior:.  Always read the next days section and understand the examples before coming to class.  Do your homework  !!!   Come to class on time.   Please wait at least 20 minutes for me to come to class - you may then leave but PLEASE DO THE NEXT SECTION FOR THE NEXT CLASS MEETING IF  I MISS CLASS !!!!.  I will reduce your test grade 5 points after your first “WARNING” for inappropriate behavior in class and then 15 points for the next inappropriate behavior.  You will only receive ONE WARNING for bad behavior  before a reduction in test points will occur.

 

VIIa)  Snow:  Please call the eagle line 372-NEWS for school information and closings.  If the University does not cancel class I WILL BE THERE AND I EXPECT YOU TO ALSO BE THERE.  No test or quiz will be made-up if you miss because of snow.  Do not call the office for information on my class.  If the University does not cancel classes I WILL BE IN CLASS !

 

VIII.  Missed Class:  If  are going to miss a class - give your assignment to another student to turn in.  YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE TO GET THE NOTES FOR WHAT YOU MISSED - PLEASE DO THE NEXT SECTION FOR THE NEXT MEETING – 2ND Odd problems, at least.

 

IX.  Office Hours:   M,T,W,  10:00, T, TH 9:30 to 12:00  (or by appointment),  Friday by appointment only. Please make an appointment with me if you cannot come to one of my scheduled office hours.  I will be happy to accommodate your schedule at anytime  !!!!  Friday by appointment only (call 261-6112).

 

X.  Success in Class:  Please have your assignments completed.  Please come to me or go to lab FH 411 before class if you cannot complete the assignment.   YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SUCCESS IN MY CLASS - I AM RESPONSIBLE TO HELP YOU BE SUCCESSFUL.  WORK IN GROUPS, GO TO LAB, WATCH THE TUTORIAL VIDEOS, COME TO MY OFFICE, GET ADVISE OR HELP FROM THE COUNSELOR - THE UNIVERSITY IS HERE TO HELP YOU AND THEY HAVE PUT RESOURCES AT YOUR DISPOSAL - USE THEM !!!!!  WORKING IN GROUPS OR IN TEAMS IS THE BEST WAY TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS AT THE UNIVERSITY - DO NOT ISOLATE YOURSELF - FORM A TEAM OR COOPERATIVE LEARNING GROUP !

 

 XI.
