COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (May 29, 2008) — It may be summertime, but at
Tennessee Tech University, the sound of music is still in the air.
From June 1 through 6, the university will host the 14th annual Southeast
Chamber Music Institute for high school musicians, at which TTU music
faculty will present free nightly concerts that are also open to the public.
The faculty concerts begin on Monday, June 2, and showtime for each is
at 7:30 p.m. All will be held in the Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan
Fine Arts Building.
The concert schedule for the week is as follows:
• Monday, June 2 — a faculty strings concert featuring Wei
Tsun Chang, violin; Melissa Allen, viola; Dan Allcott, cello; Steve Benne,
bass; and Catherine Godes, piano.
• Tuesday, June 3 — Brass Arts Quintet featuring Charles
Decker and Chris McCormick, trumpet; Greg Danner, horn; Joshua Hauser,
trombone; and Winston Morris, tuba.
• Wednesday, June 4 — Cumberland Quintet, with Roger Martin,
flute; William Woodworth, oboe; Anne Thurmond, clarinet; James Lotz, bassoon;
and Jeremy Hansen, horn.
• Thursday, June 5 — a faculty jazz concert, with Chris McCormick,
trumpet; Lonnie Breland, piano; Mark Smith, bass; and Paul Deathrage,
drums.
At 9 and 11 a.m. on Friday, June 6, the participating high school students
will showcase chamber music they have prepared, and both of those concerts
will also be free and open to the public.
“Nearly 80 high school musicians will take part, rehearsing in
chamber groups such as string quartets, brass quintets, wind quintets
and a jazz combo,” said Thurmond, a music professor at TTU and an
organizer of this year’s Institute.
Throughout the week, coaching and individual instruction will be provided
by the Cumberland Quintet and Brass Arts Quintet, as well as by various
string, piano, wind and percussion faculty. Many students will also receive
lessons in music composition.
