The College of Interdisciplinary Studies - Communication Studies
Communication Studies and Journalism

The Communication Major educates the powerful role of communication in all aspects of society through concentrations in Communication Studies and Journalism. All of our degree programs offer students opportunities to learn skills directly related to various media fields, while gaining experience building their portfolio, inside and outside of the classroom.

Concentration Areas

About our Concentrations:

  • Journalism: This concentration prepares students for a variety of employment opportunities and stresses practical experience in mass communication and media professions, emphasizing mass media, public relations and corporate communication. There are two options: News Editorial or Public Relations. The student newspaper, yearbook, magazine, radio station, television studio, podcast studio and the regional PBS-affiliate television station are integrated with class work, and students are encouraged to participate in the internship or co-op program.
  • Communication Studies: This concentration fosters understanding of the process and practice of communication among individuals, groups, organizations and cultures, with emphasis is on effective and ethical communication skills. Students have the opportunity to participate in speech and debate team activities. Upon graduation they are ready to begin careers in business, government, law, education, politics, social and human services, and international relations and negotiations, or further study on the graduate level.
