She serves as a higher education representative for middle TN on the Tennessee Association for Middle Schools Board where she is also the editor of the TAMS Journal. She serves on the Recruitment, Retention and Diversity Committee for the College of Education and is the co-chair of the subcommittee that focuses of recruitment of black students. Her research interests focus on diversity and recruitment and retention of teachers. Dr. Richards works in the local schools with administration to promote education by sponsoring teacher clubs, attending recruitment and career fairs, presenting at career fairs, and chaperoning students on field trips. She is convicted in her belief that education and teaching need to be promoted and marketed in the same way as other profitable industries (think athletics) and works to create spaces for babies to wear onesies saying "Future difference maker - Future teacher!" Previously, she was a superintendent in Alaska, a jr/sr high school principal in Colorado and an English teacher in an urban high school in Mississippi.
