About

Dr. Kexin Xu is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at Tennessee Tech University. She received her doctoral degree in Music Education from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, with a specialization area in General Music Methodology and a minor in Vocology. Kexin is a certified Kodály music educator and has completed two levels of Orff. She received her Vocology certificate from the Utah Center for Vocology at the University of Utah and the National Center for Voice and Speech. At Tennessee Tech University, she teaches Introduction to Music Education, Elementary General Music Methods, Psychology of Music, Professional Seminar, Music to Meet Exceptional Education Needs, and Aural Techniques. She serves as the faculty advisor for the Tennessee Tech Collegiate Chapter of NAfME and coordinates the music education area. Previously, she was appointed as the Associate Instructor of Music Education at Indian University and worked with the Indiana University Children’s Choir as an Assistant Conductor/Administrative Assistant.

Kexin’s research focuses on psychology of music, vocology, innovative pedagogy, and preservice music teacher education. She has published her research in Psychology of Music (in press), Journal of Music Teacher Education, and Visions of Research in Music Education. Additionally, she has a contributing chapter focused on play and imagination in vocal music education in The Routledge Companion to Creativities in Music Education. Kexin has presented original research and workshops at the International Society for Music Education World Conference, International Conference for Research in Music Education, American Educational Research Association Conference, NAfME Music Research and Teacher Education Conference, Symposium on Music Teacher Education, Big Ten Academic Alliance Music Education Conference, Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium, Mountain Lake Colloquium, and Indiana Music Educators Association Development Conference. Kexin earned a B.M. in Vocal Music Education from the University of Arizona and a M.M. in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College in New Jersey.
