David Hilliard
Knoxville native, David Hilliard stepped out of his comfort zone when he decided to transfer to Tennessee Tech University from Pellissippi State Community College. Hilliard is majoring in exercise science with a concentration in sports administration and a minor in coaching.
Although Hilliard did not take a guided tour, he did visit campus with a friend. Being able to step foot on campus and experience the environment played a big role in his decision to make Tech his next step.
“I transferred to Tech because I felt comfortable and at home as soon as I visited campus,” Hilliard revealed.
Tech’s environment was not the only important aspect of the university Hilliard chose. He is passionate about sports and knew athletics was an area he wanted to plug in wherever he landed.
“I also was very interested in getting involved in athletics, and I felt Tech had a great opportunity for that,” he stated.
That desire motivated him to become a student manager for Tennessee Tech’s Golden Eagles Men’s Basketball team, which has given him an up-close and hands-on opportunity to grow in his passion and experience within his major.
“A student manager’s responsibilities can be very time-consuming and stressful but are well worth the sacrifice,” Hilliard explained. “I chose to become a manager because I want to eventually get into coaching, and there is no better experience than being a manager.”
Hilliard’s experience at Tech was not what he expected. It surprised him in a good way and taught him a valuable lesson.
“Being away from home takes away from the comfort level, but it also challenges me to be better,” he continued. “I have also met way more people and created many relationships since getting to Tech.”
Hilliard is grateful for his transfer to Tech, but there will always be obstacles with every choice and transition. The key is to focus on the good while navigating the transition process, he said.
“The transfer has been good, and I have adjusted well – but not without challenges,” Hilliard stated.
Hilliard encouraged other students considering transferring to stay motivated and take the next step in the transition process.
“Advice I would give is to approach it with a positive mindset and take advantage of all the resources that Tech offers,” he urged.
