Tennessee Tech University’s engineering program among the best in annual ‘Best Colleges’ rankings by U.S News & World Report

Clement Hall home of the College of Engineering Administrative OfficesTennessee Tech’s College of Engineering has again been ranked as one of the nation’s top engineering programs in the annual U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, the longest-running and most widely cited assessment of U.S. colleges and universities.

In the report released this fall, the College of Engineering is among the publication's "Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs Rankings (Doctorate)" national listing for 2021-22.

Programs listed in U.S. News were evaluated by deans and senior faculty at peer institutions. To appear on the survey, a school must have an undergraduate engineering program accredited by ABET, the rigorous accrediting body for engineering programs. These programs are split into two groups: the 210 schools whose highest engineering degree offered is a doctorate and the 239 schools whose highest engineering degree offered is a bachelor's or master's. U.S. News uses this methodology because research at the graduate level often influences the undergraduate curriculum, and engineering schools with doctoral programs in engineering tend to have the widest possible range of undergraduate engineering courses and program offerings, it said.

“The honor in being named among the best engineering programs in the country is a reflection of the respect that faculty and administrators at our peer institutions have for Tech and our engineering programs,” said Joseph C. Slater, dean of engineering.

Tennessee Tech graduates also leave with the least debt of all public universities in the state. Based on total cost and alumni earnings, Tech provides students with the highest return on investment of any public university in Tennessee, according to PayScale.

“For potential students, this means they can feel confident that not only are they well-prepared in engineering upon graduation but are also getting a great start in their careers,” Slater said.

Tennessee Tech was ranked #140 among national public universities (tied for #277 overall) and was also named to the magazine’s “A+ Schools for B Students” list. The criteria for this list include high academic quality, high first-year retention rate, and high school class standing and standardized test score. Tech is one of only two public universities in the state on the list.
