Spring Tubafest begins March 24

“There will be tuba programs every night for those who just can’t get enough bass clef music,” said R. Winston Morris, founder and director of the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble.

The series of performances kick off at 3 p.m. with the Tuba/Euphonium Chamber Ensembles Tuphonium, Tu Ba Four and the Tennessee Tech Tuba Sextet. At 6 p.m. Michael Barton and Devin Rains will host a tuba recital, followed by Zach Davis’ tuba recital at 7 and Tom Ryan’s senior performance tuba recital at 8.

On Monday, March 25, a recital featuring Lena Marsh on the euphonium and Sean Bond on the tuba will be held at 6 p.m. Josh Whited will hold a euphonium recital at 7 and Tyler Ricks will perform his senior performance euphonium recital at 8.

On Tuesday, March 26, a recital featuring Riley Davis on the euphonium and Mara Wilks on the tuba will be held at 6 p.m., followed by a tuba recital by Jonah Hammontree at 7 p.m. and a euphonium recital by Taylor Winkler at 8 p.m.

The internationally acclaimed Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble will perform Wednesday evening at 7:30 with a host of very special guest artist soloists. Special guests include Kathryn Adduci, trumpet professor, and Michael Adduci, oboe professor, will perform solos with the tuba ensemble by Piazzolla and Albinoni. “Doc” Stone, guitar professor, will perform a special arrangement of the popular “Malaguena” by Cookeville’s own Ben McMillan, specifically arranged for this performance.

Several members of the ensemble will also be featured in a solo capacity and the full ensemble will perform the popular “March from 1941,” from the famous John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and Steven Spielberg 1979 movie.

The ensemble will close with Leonard Bernstein’s famous “Overture to Candide.”

On Thursday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. guest artist Kevin Wass will hold a tuba recital. Wass is a professor of tuba and euphonium at Texas Tech University. He has performed with a wide range of ensembles, including the Disneyland All-American College Band, the Music Academy of the West Festival Orchestra, the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, the Omaha, Lincoln and Honolulu Symphony Orchestras, Santa Fe Pro Musica and various brass chamber groups. He has performed individually in competitions in the United States, Canada and the Czech Republic.

Friday, March 29, there will be two recitals beginning at 6 p.m. with Guy Bortz and Jonathan Ownby with a euphonium recital. At 8 p.m., Dan Davis will hold his graduate tuba recital with Paul Thurmond on the piano.

All performances will be held in Wattenbarger Auditorium in the Bryan Fine Arts Building.
