Hispanic Professional Engineers hold retreat at Tennessee Tech

Members of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Tennessee Tech.About 50 students from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) from Tennessee and Alabama recently visited the campus of Tennessee Tech University during their sub-regional retreat. The organization, founded in 2001, was created to empower Hispanic professionals in professions in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The SHPE members from Tech and the surrounding area met for presentations and workshops that covered topics such as STEM programs offered at the university, giving elevator pitches and giving presentations.

“Being a member of SHPE at Tech has allowed me to meet new people, make new friends and make great connections,” said Gabriel Vasconcelos, a business information and technology major from Brazil.

Yamila Diaz, a computer science major from Jackson, Tennessee, agreed. “This gave me more connections to other people and different universities that I would never have had the opportunity to meet if I was not in SHPE.”

Other members from Tech said that the event helped refine their professional and social skills as they spoke with professors and other people working in their chosen field. They also learned about SHPE’s national convention and the opportunities available there.

Tennessee Tech’s chapter of SHPE meets every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Einstein Bagels’ lounge on the first floor of the Laboratory Science Commons. For more information about joining, contact president Miquel Guentes Garcia at mafuentesg42@tntech.edu.
