Scholarships

English majors are eligible for the following departmental scholarships.

Any student wishing to receive a scholarship must complete a Tennessee Tech Scholarship Application by December 15. Please read the information provided on the University's Scholarships website before applying through ScholarWeb.

Kay G. Ballew Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student

    1. must be a prospective or current student in good standing in accordance with current institutional policies;
    2. must be a Technical Communications major [an English major in the Professional Communication concentration];
    3. must be an incoming freshman with an outstanding high school record, or a sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum 2.5 cumulative QPA;
    4. must demonstrate strong leadership skills and a sincere commitment to community service.

Preference will be given to those involved in print media such as yearbook, newspaper, magazine, or anthology.

Joan Barber Memorial Scholarship in English

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student

    1. must be a current or prospective full-time student in good standing in accordance with current institutional policies;
    2. must be a new freshman with a minimum GPA of 3.3, including all high school courses, or a transfer or
    3. current student with a minimum GPA of 2.75, including all college courses;
    4. must demonstrate a specific interest in British literature and/or culture;
    5. must be working toward a B.A. or M.A. in English;
    6. may be selected for the scholarship for a second (but not third) year provided all of the above requirements are met.

Marshall And Thelma G. Bertram Liberal Arts Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student

    1. must be a prospective or current student in good standing in accordance with current institutional policies;
    2. must be of good character;
    3. must have and maintain a 3.25 GPA on a four-point system.

The award will be made to a full-time rising junior based on the student’s scholarship and achievements during the freshman and sophomore years.

This scholarship rotates with History and Foreign Languages.

Robert F. Bode Memorial Scholarship in English

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student

    1. must be a prospective or current student in good standing in accordance with current institutional policies;
    2. must be either an incoming freshman or a rising sophomore English major who demonstrates academic excellence and promise based on his/her grade point average, which must be a minimum of 3.0.

Preference will be given to the applicant who best demonstrates his/her ability to contribute to the cultural, religious, racial, ethnic, and/or sexual diversity of the student body through an essay to be judged by a committee of faculty members in English.

This scholarship may be renewed on a yearly basis at the discretion of the Department Chair and the Scholarship Committee. The maximum renewal period of an incoming freshman is eight (8) semesters; six (6) semesters is the maximum renewal period for a rising sophomore.

Charles Denson Daniel Memorial Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must be a prospective or current student in good standing in accordance with current institutional policies.

This scholarship is awarded annually in the spring to junior or senior English majors.

William W. Jenkins Creative Writing Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student

    1. must be a prospective or current student in a major within the Department of English and in good standing in accordance with current institutional policies;
    2. must have completed one or more creative writing courses at Tennessee Tech before or during the award period.

A portfolio of creative work is required for consideration.

APPLICATION & PORTFOLIO GUIDELINES

William W. Jenkins Professional Communication Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must be a prospective or current student in a major within the Department of English and in good standing in accordance with current institutional policies.

William W. Jenkins Theatre Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student

    1. must be a prospective or current student in a major within the Department of English and in good standing in accordance with current institutional policies;
    2. must have a significant record of participation in, and contribution to, the Theatre program at Tennessee Tech.

Sheila H. Officer Scholarship in English

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student

    1. must be a current English student in good standing in accordance with current institutional policies;
    2. must be a sophomore, junior, or senior student;
    3. must maintain a minimum "B" average.

The scholarship will be renewable so long as the minimum grade average is maintained.

Francis Savage Taylor Scholarship in English

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must be an English major from a small town in Middle Tennessee with an aptitude for college work, but does not need to be an all "A" student.

McGill And Maxine Deberry Vaden Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student

    1. must be a prospective or current student in good standing in accordance with current institutional policies;
    2. must be pursuing a bachelor of science [Bachelor of Arts] degree in the area of technical communication [Professional Communication] as defined by the Department of English in consultation with the Dean of Arts & Sciences;
    3. must be pursuing a degree in Professional and Technical Communication;
    4. must, if either an entering freshman or a transfer student, have achieved at least a 3.0 GPA;
    5. must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.
    6. The award will be made to the most financially needy student in the event that applicants are otherwise equally qualified.

Caroll Viera Appreciation Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student

    1. must be a current or prospective student in good standing;
    2. must be an international student or a student from an underserved population;
    3. must have demonstrated a desire to master the English language;
    4. must use the scholarship to advance his/her language abilities (i.e., additional courses, independent study, tutor assistance, etc.).
    5. Financial need, educational disadvantages, or other personal hardships may be considered.
