What is Computer Science?
Computer Science is the study of the theories and applications of computers. The field is generally partitioned into a number of different subfields including systems, software, theory, and applications. In the Department of Computer Science at Tennessee Technological University we teach a core undergraduate program in Computer Science as well as three concentrations in Information Assurance Cybersecurity (IAC), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI), and High Performance Computing (HPC).
While the common perception of computer science is that students engage in computer programming and gaming, it is much more common that graduates must be astute problem solvers and be highly skilled in interpersonal and group communication, especially as they engage in working in multi-disciplinary teams to develop large software systems.
While some of our graduates do go on to work in traditional mainstream computing companies, many go on to work in the financial, health care, entertainment, and government sectors. Graduates are in high demand, with employers based all over Tennessee, regionally in the South, across the United States, and Globally. To date, we have graduates in 30 different US states and over 10 countries internationally.
