- » Algood Family Collection
Henry Brooks Algood (1860-1934), a druggist who owned Algood Pharmacy in Cookeville, was the son of Joel Algood, for whom the town of Algood was named. His wife, Frances "Fannie" Crutcher Algood (1862-1936) traveled across the United States purchasing ladies' hats and accessories to sell to the women of Putnam County. This collection contains ledgers, financial records, receipts, and other materials that belonged to Henry and Fannie.

Arthur Story Bushing (March 24, 1922 – October 29, 2008) spent much of his childhood in Jamestown, Tennessee, was a Maryville College alumnus, and a World War II Army veteran. He returned from the service to the employ of his alma mater as an Assistant Professor, eventually serving as chair of the English Department and taking the role of Dean of Men. Retiring in 1996, he remained active in the life of the college and pursued research interests. Chief among those interests was the history surrounding his father, Arthur Samuel Bushing, who had served as Sergeant Alvin C. York’s personal secretary upon York’s return from Europe after World War I. This collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and photos passed down to him from his father, as well as the documentation of his own research and presentations of its findings in articles and speeches.

Dero Armistead Darwin was a descendant of pioneer settlers in Jackson County, born in 1900. He attended New Bethel School there, and later, Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (TPI), graduating in 1922. He married fellow TPI student Clemma Masters from Cookeville in 1923, and settled near Gainesboro. He became a partner in Johnson and Darwin Dry Good Store in Livingston in 1927. This collection consists of family personal and business records stemming back to 1829, including letters, histories (Cumberland Presbyterian Church in particular), and contents of a scrapbook mostly highlighting his alma maters including: programs, newspaper clippings, and photos. Included also in this collection are his grandfather’s, George Cowan Darwin, Jr.’s (1812-1876), business ledgers.

Dr. Dora Lee Wilder Smith (1877-1963), was the first woman to graduate from the University of Tennessee Medical Department, and the first woman to receive a medical license from the State of Tennessee (1906). She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and wife of Union Civil War General J. T. Wilder. Aside from practicing medicine, and being a strong advocate for tuberculosis care and prevention, she ran the Imperial Hotel with her husband in Monterey, Tennessee. After his passing, she married railroad developer Percy B. Smith, with whom she continued to manage the hotel. Materials in this collection consist of correspondence, associations, writings, legal papers, medical school records, family histories, photographs, newspaper articles, and various small personal effects.

Dating from 1935 to 2000, the collection is comprised of textual records, photographs, slides, microfilm, and cassette audio recordings, and videos.

Dr. William Schrader began teaching at Tennessee Tech in the history department as an assistant professor in 1966, became a full professor in 1978, retired in 2002, and remains as Professor Emeritus. He served as president of the faculty senate from 1992-1994. This collection consists of 24 boxes of documents, containing some of his teaching material, and reflecting both his committee and association involvements, as well as his wider contributions as an historian beyond Tech.

The Driver Family Collection consists of various materials gathered by James Gray "Bobo" Driver (1916-1992) and Ruby Nell Haas Driver (1920-2012). The materials in the collection range from 1968 to 2001. Multiple items are ephemeral, and some are handmade. Differing forms of recorded music are also present amongst the materials. The collection's primary subjects revolve around events and people of Smithville, Tennessee, including the Smithville Fiddlers' Jamboree, the Smithville-DeKalb Founders Day Celebration in 1968, and Joe L. Evins' political career and tribute at Tennessee Tech University in 1976.

Ora Wilbert Eads Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on April 22, 1945. He attained his B.A., M.A. from Appalachian State University and his PHD from the University of Georgia. He was a Booker and Appraiser of Eads Investments Properties Inc. in Nashville, Tennessee. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason. Ora and his wife were members of the Optimist Club International, McWhitersville Lodge #375 in Donelson, Orchid Society of Nashville, Nashville Philatelic Club, the Arts League of Nashville, and Historical Society of Carthage, Tennessee. He was married to Eleanor Eads for 39 years. Ora and Eleanor opened the Eads Museum in Carthage together. Ora died on January 10, 2018 and was buried at the Historic Mount Olivet Cemetery. The Eads building is a renovated Tobacco factory. Each room in the museum was dedicated to a different exhibit such as books, tin pots, tobacco memorabilia, and rocks. The majority of the collection is made up of documents and letters.

Ada (Ida) Frances (Francis) Byrne was born July 29, 1913 in Granville, Tennessee. She dies in Cookeville, Tennessee in her home on Cherry Street at 21 years in September of 1934. She married Joel C. Hensley on January 16, 1933. She is buried in City Cemetery. She played women's basketball for Baxter Seminary and attended the school. She was a member of the Polyhymnian Literary Society, Debate Club, and the Home-Ec Club. Papers include candy wrappers, school papers, debates, newspaper clippings, visiting cards, a ring size chart, papers relating to high school basketball, and programs for events at Tennessee Tech, Baxter Seminary, the Strand Theatre, and other Upper Cumberland Schools.

The General Faculty Meeting usually occurred three to five times a year and was generally presided over by the university president. Reports would be presented from the University Assembly, the Academic Council, the Administrative Council, the Faculty Senate, along with comments from the president. It was customary for new faculty to be welcomed. Faculty earning service pins, or other awards and retiring faculty would be acknowledged. This collection consists of agendas and minutes of these meetings dating from 1980 through 2007.

Social fraternity, Kappa Phi Delta, began in 1964 by eight Tennessee Tech men. At the time, social fraternities were prohibited on Tech's campus, although there were a number of them that were operating and the University, especially President Derryberry, was aware of the operation of these illegal social fraternities. By winter 1966, the administration began to come to terms with the students body's desire for social fraternities and fully recognized the number of fraternities operating illegally on campus. It launched a study, "The Fraternity Situation," which ended in the recognition of fraternities meeting set qualifications. Kappa Phi Delta was the only fraternity that met these qualifications and became the first social fraternity on campus on February 23, 1967. The collection includes records of the original fraternity before its merger with Kappa Sigma in 1969. Records include original minutes, rosters, and 2014 history of the first approved fraternity at Tennessee Tech prior to its approval. This library was named for the Tech President and his wife who were in office when the library was built and opened, The Angelo and Jennette Volpe Library. The library has had three homes on Tech's campus. First it was housed in the Administration Building, now Derryberry Hall. A new library was built on the quad and opened in 1949, later named Jere Whitson Library. In 1989, a new three story, 122,000 square foot library opened. Library records date from 1918 to 2015, with the bulk of the records dating from 1950 to 2010. These records were acquisitioned and accessioned several times over those years.

Lottie Farr (1907-1994) was an English professor at Tennessee Tech University and worked with the College of Education. She was involved with the Putnam County Library and was treasurer for the Board of Trustees. Through the Department of English, she edited and copyrighted a collection of poetry by Clara Cox Epperson. The materials primarily date from 1970 to 1986, with the bulk of materials dating from 1970 to 1983. The materials consist of Putnam County Library records, book layouts and information, Clara Cox Epperson’s writings, negatives of the book, correspondences, and obituaries.

Robert W. Lowe and his wife, Mary Alice Whitson Lowe, were residents of Cookeville. Robert W. Lowe ran for U.S. Senator in 1938 as Executive Committeeman. He was a member of the Upper Cumberland Chapter Sons of the American Revolution, and his wife was a member of the Old Walton Road Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.). This collection contains family letters, including some from World War I, D. A. R. correspondence, bulletins, and 1938 campaign advertisements, dating from 1873 to 1946.

The records date from 1978 to 2014 and include ephemera, memorabilia, and the official records of the Mastersingers such as information on membership and singers, board member meetings, constitutions, budgets, and financial statements.

This collection includes various Tennessee Tech programs, pamphlets, fliers, booklets, guides, brochures, and ephemera created by the University. Archives created the collection to deal with various materials that either had no obvious home in University Archives or materials that had provenance at one point, but it was lost over the years. Rather than move small, one-off items to a larger collection, which requires a large amount of work, the archives created this collection to deal with the current and future problems regarding materials of this nature.

Ric Finch was a geology faculty member at Tennessee Technological University. He began in 1975. Ric Finch's papers include numerous slides from his thesis, a geology field trip he took with University of Texas, field trips taken with Tennessee Tech, and the Geology Club. This record group also contains records from Ric Finch regarding the building of PSR-451 Corridor J, including records regarding community action against it and records relating to its construction.

Robert Edward Jager was born on August 25, 1939 in Binghamton, New York. He began school at the University of Michigan but was one-year shy of graduating when his family relocated to Tennessee. Robert enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as Staff Arranger/Composer at the Armed Forces School of Music from 1962 until 1965. After serving in the U.S. Navy for four years, he graduated in 1968 from the University of Michigan with a Master of Music Degree. He was hired as a Lecturer in Composition and Directing at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. During his three years at ODU, he composed both the words and music for their Alma Mater. In 1971, Robert Jager relocated to Cookeville, Tennessee to join the faculty at Tennessee Technological University. In 2001, after teaching music theory and composition for 30 years, he retired from Tennessee Tech with the title of professor emeritus. The Tennessee Tech Foundation is currently working to create the Robert Jager Music Education Endowment. Robert Jager has traveled as a conductor and lecturer across the United States of America, Canada, Europe, Japan, and the Republic of China. In addition to being the only three-time winner of the American Bandmaster's Association "Oswald Award", he has earned two fellowships along with several awards that span several decades. Robert holds memberships in several organizations including the American Bandmasters Association, American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Kappa Phi, and is an honorary member of the Women's Band Directors Association. The Robert E. Jager papers date from 1956 to 2018. Robert E. Jager, a composer, arranger, and educator, compiled the collection. The compilation includes sketchbooks, manuscripts, published musical scores, unpublished musical scores, publicity, programs, newspaper clippings, magazines, books, awards, correspondence, name tags, scrapbooks, photographs, publications, lectures, an interview, a speech, a thesis, compact discs, LP records, a DVD, a sound reel, and a VHS tape. The collection provides a complete account of Robert E. Jager's career in the music industry from his childhood through 2018.

The School of Music records date from about 1965 to 2013. Textual records include recruitment booklets, publicity for the grand opening ceremonies of the Bryan Fine Arts Center, and publicity about awards and concerts. There are also (audio reel, DAT tape, CD, and album) recordings of the School of Music’s concerts given at Tennessee Tech and a record press of the following nature: large and faculty ensembles, faculty and alumni recitals, and performances of historical significance. This includes performances by: Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphony Band, University Orchestra, Bryan Symphony Orchestra, Concert Choir, Chorale, Mastersingers, Trouveres Jazz Band, Troubadours Jazz Band, Brass (Arts) Quintet, Cumberland Woodwind Quintet, and Faculty Jazz.

The Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree and Crafts Festival was established by Berry C. Williams, James G. Driver, and Congressmen Joe L. Evins in Smithville, Tennessee. Commencing on July 1, 1972, the Smithville Jamboree has since become an annual gathering of musicians, dancers, performers, and artists. The dates of the Smithville Jamboree Collection range from 1952 to 2021. There are multiple individual compilers to this collection, such as Berry C. Williams and Roger Estes. The bulk of the collection, however, is composed of materials preserved by the Smithville Jamboree Board. There is also a substantial number of photographs permitted by Neil Dudney to be electronically included with the collection The collection contains event programs, photographs, ephemera, correspondence, and documents pertaining to the Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree and Crafts Festival. The collection provides a general overview of the festival, such as past competitions, contestants, craft booths, and notable events, such as guest speakers and celebrity appearances.

The Staff Advisory Committee to the President met to act in an advisory capacity to the President and/or the President’s staff for the purpose of generating and recommending ideas, philosophies, procedures, and policies on topics deemed to be important to the Tennessee Tech’s staff. Through this committee, staff could relay matters of university-wide concern to the President, and the President communicated information that would be disseminated to the staff. The committee also evaluated policies impacting Tech’s staff for the purpose of presenting recommended changes to the President and to the Tennessee Board of Regents. This collection consists of agendas, minutes and memorandum generated from 1988 to 2003.

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) coordinates the policies and programs of the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) and the Board of Trustees of the University of Tennessee System. Tennessee Tech was a member of the TBR until 2016, when it then established an independent Board of Trustees. These records, dating from 1937 to 1996, include minutes of meetings, correspondence, publications, and reports. The material covers a broad range of issues impacting students and faculty, and budgetary matters.

T.J. Farr (1902-1962) was a history professor at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute and a chairperson of the English and Education Departments. He was also involved with the Tennessee Folklore Society and gathered folklore from across the Upper Cumberland region, along with East Tennessee Folklore. The materials date from 1926 to 1961, with the bulk of materials dating from 1935. The materials consist of Tennessee Folklore Society Bulletins, correspondences, and membership materials; along with different folklore and superstitions he collected, and some personal attributes.

The Tennessee Tech Women's Center was founded in 1993 to empower women in the student body, on the faculty, and on the staff of the University community through the dissemination of information, education and consultation. They collaborated with other areas of the University to provide a range of services and events to enhance the lives of women and men in the University community. An integral part of this group in early years was Dr. Gretta Stranger, who served a s Women's Center Director for many years.
