Tech computer science department plans April 25 celebration for alumni, community members
Tennessee Tech University’s computer science department will hold a free event for
students, alumni and community members on April 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Bruner Hall
119 and 228.
Billed as Celebrate <C/S>, the event will feature hors d’oeuvres, a string quartet
and tours of the department’s newly remodeled quarters in Bruner Hall. The name and
use of angle brackets is a nod to HTML code.
“This is a time to celebrate our computing community,” said Gerald Gannod, Ph.D.,
chair of the computer science department. “Spring commencement is near, so we want
to recognize and honor our students who are graduating as well as reconnect with our
computer science alumni. A lot has changed in our growing department over the past
few years, and we want to share our student and faculty successes.”
Other highlights of the event include the display of new graphic identifiers created
by Tech graphic design student Rebecca Hahnert, who has worked for the computer science
department since January 2022 and will be graduating this spring.
Hahnert’s latest project – portraits of influential computer scientists Alan Turing,
Ada Lovelace, Anita Borg, Edsger Dijkstra, Grace Hopper and John von Neumann – will
be unveiled during the program. These computer scientists are the namesakes of a new
house system within the department.
“Rebecca has done an outstanding job of enhancing the department’s identity and branding,”
Gannod added. “We can’t say enough about her talent and creativity, and we are thrilled
to present her work to the community.”
“We invite the community to meet us and see what’s new in the department,” Gannod
concluded.
Computer science is the second-largest program of study at Tech with approximately
