The Student Veteran Organization Volunteers at the House of Hope In
Crossville, TN

Cumberland Children’s Center, better known as the “House of Hope,” provides a short-term transitional care environment with the comforts of a home like setting for infants, serving the children and teens of Tennessee waiting to be placed in foster care, with a relative or in a therapeutic care facility. In 2023 alone, House of Hope provided 1,803 services for 1,051 children.
Tennessee Technological University's Student Veteran Organization (SVO) President, Lane Johnston, previously worked at the House of Hope and coordinated the volunteer opportunity. SVO members spent the day sorting clothing, toys, and household items at House of Hope's warehouse.
Tennessee Tech named to the College of Distinction's 2021-2022 list of "Best Military Colleges"

Tennessee Tech has been honored by the College of Distinction program as being one
of the best colleges in the United States in supporting military students. The program
has named Tennessee Tech onto their list of "Best Military Support Colleges". Here is a brief description of this honor, taken from their website:

Tennessee Tech University is a 2021 Military Times Best for Vets College!

The department of Military and Veteran Affairs is excited to announce that Tennessee Tech has made it into the list of the 2021 Military Times' Best for Vets: College rankings. We are honored to be on this list, and strive to be a top college destination for veterans and their families.
Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges is the largest and most comprehensive rankings of schools for military service members and veterans, and has been a top resource to help with their education decisions. The rankings are based on survey responses from schools as well as public data about colleges and universities obtained from the Department of Education and Department of Veterans Affairs.
DoD restores concurrent use of Federal Tuition Assistance & Montgomery GI Bill® - Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606) education benefits for Guard and Reserve Members

On May 4, 2021, the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) signed a memorandum enabling members of the Guard and Reserve to concurrently use Federal Tuition Assistance and GI Bill® benefits to fund their education, similar to active duty servicemembers.
Currently, individuals who qualify for Montgomery GI Bill® – Active Duty (MGIB-AD), also known as the “Post 9/11 GI Bill®,” are able to simultaneously use Federal Tuition Assistance and GI Bill® benefits. In 2014, the Department of Defense (DoD) issued a policy that prohibits similar concurrent usage of tuition assistance with the Montgomery GI Bill® – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR).
The DoD has now updated its policy to allow Guard and Reserve members to utilize both their GI Bill® benefits and the tuition assistance concurrently, providing parity with active duty servicemembers.
This means that Guard and Reserve members enrolled in half-time or more program of study may now receive their Tuition Assistance and MGIB-SR (Chapter 1606) benefits simultaneously for the same course.
