Student Organizations
More than just having classes together
Apart from having classes together, physics students have opportunities to interact with each other in meetings and activities of the Physics Club. In addition, many physics majors are members of the Tennessee Tech Honors Program, and there are also many other student organizations across campus that may be of interest.
Physics Club
The Physics Club is student-led, with membership being voluntary and open to all interested students. The club typically sponsors several social activities during the academic year, such as movie nights, hikes, frisbee-golf, etc. They are also regularly involved in developing and running activities for public outreach events at the Millard Oakley STEM Center, and offering help/tutoring for students in introductory physics classes. For more information contact the club's faculty advisor, Dr. Adam Holley.
Society of Physics Students
The Physics Club acts as the Tennessee Tech chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS), a national organization for undergraduate physics students. AS such all Physics CLub members are also members of SPS. The national SPS organization offers many resources for physics students, including the excellent Careers Toolbox and Grad School Shopper.
Sigma Pi Sigma
Founded in 1921, Sigma Pi Sigma is the national physics honors society associated with the SPS. To be invited into membership you must be in the upper third of your class in general scholarship, have completed at least three semesters of full-time college course work, and have completed at least three courses that count toward a physics degree. Newly qualified Tennessee Tech physics majors are invited to join every year.
