Instructor Responsibilities

As an instructor, you must be an active participant in academic integrity. Review Instructor Tips & Resources for ideas on how to incorporate academic integrity into your course.

When you reasonably believe an academic integrity violation has occurred, it is your responsibility to follow Policy 216: Student Academic Integrity. You cannot penalize students for an academic integrity violation outside of Policy 216

It is your responsibility to make it clear to your students what they are allowed to do/use when completing course assignments and tests. It's in everyone's best interest to put those guidelines in writing. Write up guidelines for each assignment and put them in iLearn or hand them out. It should also be on the syllabus if it is the same for all assignments.

Here are some questions you should address:

    • Which sources and/or materials are allowed and not allowed?
    • Are your students allowed to collaborate with other students?
    • Are your students allowed to use textbooks/notes/calculators/etc.?
    • Are your students allowed to use generative artificial intelligence (like ChatGPT)? Note: If they are allowed, you should further clarify how they are allowed to use it. Should they use it only for ideas and examples? Or are they allowed to copy and paste text from it? If they use the text, do they have to cite it?
    • Are your students allowed to re-use an assignment/paper they used for a previous class? Note: If they are allowed, you should further clarify how they are allowed to use it.  Are they only allowed to re-use the topic? Or are they allowed to use the exact text? Are they allowed to use the whole thing?

Encourage your students to ask questions to ensure they understand. You have the final say regarding what your students can and can't do/use on course assignments and tests.

The list above is not exhaustive, so if you think of other details to include, please do so. You should convey these guidelines as early as possible so your students do not begin work without this knowledge. Offering clear, detailed guidelines helps ensure you and your students are on the same page and helps them avoid an academic integrity violation.

Be sure to review Policy 216: Student Academic Integrity to learn about academic integrity violations and see examples.

If you suspect one of your students is involved in an academic integrity violation, you have responsibilities as detailed in the Instructor Procedures & Deadlines.
