Thesis/Dissertation Formatting
Introduction
All graduate students (except those using LaTeX or those authorized to create a manuscript-style format) submitting a thesis or dissertation must follow the guidelines under each link on the left starting with General Formatting. Students who do not follow these guidelines must work with the Office of Graduate Studies to correct formatting errors before graduating. All graduate students are encouraged to have the Writing Excellence Studio (WEST) review their paper prior to submission to ProQuest.
Getting Help
If you have specific formatting issues, please make an appointment with The Writing Excellence Studio at Tennessee Tech University (WEST).
To Schedule an Individual Writing Consultation:
Go to www.tntech.edu/techconnect.
Log in using your Tennessee Tech username and password (use the same username and password that you use for your email). Then select the following:
Care Unit: Tutoring
Location: WEST (Writing Excellence Studio)
Service: Writing Consultation (WEST)
Meeting Type: In Person or Microsoft Teams
That will bring up a list of available consultants and times. Choose the person whose schedule best fits yours!
Graduate students are encouraged to have their paper reviewed prior to submission into ProQuest.
LaTeX Students
Some students in math and engineering may be using LaTeX to format their dissertation or thesis. If you are using LaTeX, please download the manual and required files. LaTeX will format most of your document for you, but you need to review the Approval and References sections on the left. When you submit your work to Graduate Studies in ProQuest, put a note in the comment box that you used LaTeX.
Manuscript-Style Format (EVS and some ChemE papers)
Several programs at Tennessee Tech conduct research best presented as discrete journal articles rather than a continuous document. Manuscript chapters may better showcase individual projects and streamline publication, aligning with the program requirement for students to submit a manuscript for publication before graduation. Download the Manuscript Format Requirements Sheet for guidance. When you submit your manuscript-style formatted paper in ProQuest, email gradstudies@tntech.edu to let us know you have been authorized to use this formatting option.
